Enhancing A Major High Street Retailer’s Surveillance

Setting The Scene…

A substantial estate belonging to a major high street retailer based in the East Midlands presented significant perimeter security risks spanning almost 300 acres. Corps Security identified drone technology as a means to enhance the site’s 24/7 security measures.

In November 2024, Corps Security partnered with Security Drone Group (SDG) to conduct a comprehensive week-long trial to evaluate the drone capabilities and enhance the pharmaceutical estate surveillance.

Security Challenges

The facility presented a complex security environment, as the site consisted of corporate offices, manufacturing, packing and distribution buildings, situated in a remote location. It required:

  • Prevention of theft of consumer goods and manufacturing products
  • Extensive perimeter coverage to prevent fence breaches
  • Remote vehicle tracking software to monitor speeding or dangerous driving
  • Out-of-hours perimeter patrols

Cutting-edge Drone Deployment

After a detailed site assessment, a proof of concept trial was conducted utilising the M3TD drone system deployed with the DJI Dock 2 drone hanger, a tool designed for autonomous operations. A pre-flight inspection of the drone was conducted, flight parameters agreed on, and pilot certification was obtained.

The implementation included:

  • Weatherproof IP55 classification and operation in wind speeds of up to 26mph at a maximum radius of 10 kilometres
  • Seamless integration with existing security systems
  • 28x digital zoom camera providing detailed surveillance capability
  • Six directional sensors for obstacle detection and avoidance
  • Infrared thermal imaging capabilities to identify individuals in low-light areas

Transformative Results

With the M3TD in place, the drone security system delivered immediate and measurable improvements…

Rapid response: The system delivered a pre-programmed 90-second response time, with real-time incident capture providing direct relay capabilities to the control room.

Enhancing perimeter security: Frequent automated patrols provided essential support for limited security guarding resources, particularly during out-of-hours periods.

Vehicle tracking: The system proved highly effective in tracking vehicles and persons of interest. Surveillance and deterrence measures reduced incidents involving unknown vehicles.

Visible deterrence: The presence of the drone system, supported by appropriate signage, created a significant deterrent effect across the site.

Site operational benefits: Roof inspection capabilities, car park space monitoring and health and safety checks were possible with the drone surveillance.

Low-light operation: The thermal capabilities proved indispensable, allowing for identification of individuals during low-light operations.
