Today, Wednesday 8th May, is World Facilities Management Day, a time for the entire FM industry to recognise the unwavering hard work of workplace and facilities teams around the world. This year, World FM Day takes the theme of ‘Inspire, Integrate, Innovate: Ignite your career in FM’.
FM underpins businesses across the globe, often as a silent partner in the background. From construction and fit outs, asset maintenance and repair, to the cleaners and security officers – who are the faces that clients, building occupants and visitors interact with every day. FM covers a broad spectrum and impacts people daily.
Today is about recognising all those people that keep buildings operating smoothly and securely and celebrating the many roles the industry has to offer.
Careers in FM
As there are a variety of disciplines within an integrated FM service, there are many exciting opportunities for career development and growth, as frontline staff are supported internally to enter management positions.
The role of a security professional, for example, is critical to business operations and an embedded function within FM services. Security officer expertise is paramount and involves a wealth of training – our teams are not just monitoring buildings around the clock, but they are staying up-to-date with legislation and best practice, understanding an ever-changing threat landscape, and being the friendly front-of-house contact for anyone coming through the door.
Gone are the days of the security professionals being a silent figure in the shadows. Today the role has evolved into a guest services provision, where vigilance is a priority. Technical upskilling is also key as monitoring and ingress and egress technology accelerates.
On the technical side of the company, Corps Monitoring are continuously investing in cutting edge technology. This not only transforms the range of services we offer to clients but also equips our colleagues with the required upskilling, and the best tools to conduct their work.
Giving back
The FM industry is in a pivotal position to be able to do better for people and the planet, and we want to take our people on that journey with us. We believe in helping others, not just through our officers’ day-to-day work, but through social value embedded throughout our organisation. As a Social Enterprise, we proudly support the wellbeing of our colleagues and the communities we operate within.
Our partnership with National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society Limited (NFU Mutual) sees a portion of the revenue generated from the contract going directly towards our nominated charity Combat Stress, who provide veteran mental health support.
We have fundraised for Combat Stress for just shy of a decade, and last year, we raised over £22,000 through multiple initiatives. Members across our community have taken part in these fundraising initiatives, from our head office personnel and our clients, to our officers.
We also care about setting equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) as an expectation, rather than just a requirement. We have a group of passionate individuals titled Guardians, who advocate for ED&I initiatives and shape our internal policies, as well as running our ED&I scheme, Corps Together.
We also care about the health of our colleagues, which is why we are developing a Mental Wellness Covenant for the wider industry.
