Corps Security Marches For Remembrance Sunday

Every year, Remembrance Sunday gives us time to pay tribute to the brave servicemen and women who gave their lives to protect others and honour the veterans who face challenges after surviving conflict.

On the 9th of November, members of our Corps Veteran Association (CVA), the Corps Security Commissionaires, Commissionaires Canada, colleagues and guests came together in Whitehall to parade past the Cenotaph, the national war memorial that has been visited by members of the Royal Family, Government officials, and Military representatives since 1920. Corps was honoured to once again join the centre of the UK’s commemorations.

Welcoming our Canadian colleagues

On Friday the 7th, we were pleased to welcome our colleagues and our Canadian contingent, Commissionaires Canada, with a drinks reception. The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires was founded in 1925 and modelled after the British Corps of Commissionaires, to employ Canadian veterans after the First World War.

Its foundation follows a similar history to our own. In 1859, Captain Sir Edward Walter established the Corps of Commissionaires to employ those returning from the Crimean War.

Remembering, together

Ahead of Remembrance Day, some of our group attended the Lady Mayor’s show on Saturday, the 8th, the civic procession held yearly since the early 13th century. The age-old tradition sees the newly elected Mayor travel upriver to distant Westminster and swear loyalty to the King. The first year to host a Lady Mayor, rather than a Lord, the event allowed guests to witness a refreshed version of a historic act unique to London.

On Remembrance Sunday, the group viewed the parade from the back of Whitehall and joined the parade party at The Naval & Military Club for a ceremonial luncheon. Colleagues and guests came together to commemorate those lost by reciting the Ode for the Fallen, Last Post, and holding toasts honouring those lost.

The parade is one of many Corps Remembrance commemorations this year. On Tuesday, 11th November, we come together again for Armistice Day, which commemorates the end of the First World War. On this day, Corps representatives gather in our burial ground in Brookwood Cemetery to lay wreaths at the graves of Commissionaires.

Remembrance is a unifying moment, and being able to invite Canadian commissionaires and other guests to commemorate with us is a privilege.

Reflections on the day

Nigel Horne, Divisional Director and Chair of the CVA, said: “Remembrance Sunday is a profound moment for everyone at Corps. As a former serviceman myself, I’m incredibly proud to lead our parade past the Cenotaph. Standing together at Whitehall, alongside our Canadian colleagues and guests, we carry forward that legacy of service and support.”

Remembrance is a poignant period at Corps and reinforces our dedication to support veterans not just in employment, but with mental health challenges, and in helping their wider support network.

The CVA supports our veterans, and fundraises for active and ex-servicemen and women, along with their families. As an Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme Gold-accredited business, we are proud to support veterans in their transition from service to civilian positions.

As we continue to work closely with veterans, we must never forget those who lost their lives to service. We will remember them.

Remembrance Sunday: Honouring Sacrifice and Service

On Sunday, November 12th 2023, Corps Security will participate in the National Service of Remembrance March Past at the Cenotaph, to pay tribute to those who have bravely fought for our country.

A group of eight officers from Corps Security, led by former serviceman and divisional director Nigel Horne, will march past the Cenotaph and lay three wreaths on behalf of the Corps associations to honour the fallen.

Corps Security was established in 1859 with the mission of providing employment for former servicemen returning from the Crimean War. The company continues to uphold the military values of loyalty, integrity, and service. It remains proud of its 164-year-heritage in the armed forces and continues to employ many ex-military personnel.

In observance of Remembrance Day this year, a team from Corps Security visited Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey on Saturday 11th November, to lay wreaths at the graves of Commissionaires. Led by honorary Australian Commissionaire Diz Sollesse, the group included Nigel Horne.

To pay respects to the courageous sacrifice of soldiers from the UK, Canada, and Australia, the group placed three wreaths at the obelisk. The monument commemorates the Corps of Commissionaires’ founder, Captain Sir Edward Walter. He began the 1859 campaign to employ Crimean War veterans.

Since its founding, the Corps of Commissionaires has maintained an area of the cemetery as a burial ground for its members and their families. Today, the Corps Heritage Project oversees the active restoration of the grounds, with teams clearing and restoring graves and trimming back the undergrowth.

Corps Security Commemorates The Sacrifices Of The Fallen

Sunday 13th November, specialist security services provider, Corps Security, will take part in the National Service of Remembrance March Past held at the Cenotaph to remember and honour those who have fought for our country.

Today, Remembrance Sunday, eight officers from Corps Security, led by Nigel Horne, divisional director, will march past the Cenotaph, laying three wreaths on behalf of the Corps associations in honour of the fallen. A Regimental lunch at the Naval & Military Club in St. James’s Square will follow the march past.

Founded in 1859 to provide employment for former servicemen returning from the Crimean War, our founding military values of loyalty, integrity and service prevail today. We still employ many ex-military personnel and remain extremely proud of our 163-year roots in the armed forces.

Marking Remembrance Day this year, a team from Corps Security visited Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey to lay wreaths where Commissionaires are buried. Led by Diz Sollesse, an honorary Australian Commissionaire, the group included former serviceman and Corps divisional director Nigel Horne, among others.

To honour the brave sacrifice of fallen soldiers from the UK, Canada and Australia, the group placed three wreaths at the obelisk commemorating our founder Captain Sir Edward Walter who established the Corps of Commissionaires to provide gainful employment for former servicemen returning from the Crimean War.

Within the cemetery, the group also reflected at several graves of significant commissionaires including Lance-Corporal James Hollowell from the 78th Highlanders and Drum Major William Kenny from the Gordon Highlanders who both held the Victoria Cross.

Shortly after we were founded in 1859, the Corps of Commissionaires reserved an area of the cemetery as a burial ground for our members and their families. Today, our Corps Heritage Project, oversees the active restoration of the grounds with teams clearing and restoring graves and trimming back the undergrowth.

Corps Security Remembers The Fallen

To mark Remembrance Sunday, Corps Security has laid wreaths at Brookwood Cemetery, where many of our fallen soldiers are buried. Earlier this week, before the national lockdown commenced, former serviceman Nigel Horne and honorary Australian Commissionaire Diz Sollesse, placed wreaths on the granite obelisk which commemorates the life of our founder Captain Sir Edward Walter.

They remembered Sergeant William Kenny from the Gordon Highlanders who was awarded the Victoria Cross and Cross of the Order of St George and mentioned in dispatches for his bravery during the Great War where he served across the Western Front. After being discharged in 1919, he joined the Corps of Commissionaires, working in Bond Street, Berkeley Square and the Park Royal. He was also a member of the VC guard at the interment of the unknown warrior on 11 November 1920.

Nigel and Diz also remembered Lance-Corporal James Hollowell from the 78th Highlanders who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his courage during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. He was described as a crack shot who successfully defended a burning house with nine fellow soldiers while the enemy, who vastly outnumbered the group, fired at them through the windows. He returned to England and joined the Corps of Commissionaires serving outside a gentleman’s outfitters on London’s Oxford Street.

We are proud of our military links and Remembrance Day firmly connects us to our 160-year-old military roots. Although celebrations are more muted this year, they are no less important.

Corps Security Celebrates Its Roots And Gives Thanks This Remembrance Sunday

Corps Security, said to be the oldest security firm in the world, is returning to its roots this Remembrance Sunday.

The Corps of Commissionaires – as it was until 2008 – was founded by Captain Sir Edward Walter in 1859 as a means of offering ‘gainful employment’ to ex-servicemen returning from the Crimean War. By 1880, Corps had over 1,000 members operating in London, Belfast, and Liverpool. Only four years later, the company expanded to Australia, where there is still an active veterans’ association today.

Corps Security will be recognising Remembrance Sunday, which falls on the 10th of November, by participating in the March Past and holding a Remembrance lunch at the Army and Navy Club in Pall Mall. The event will be jointly hosted by the company’s Chairman, Malcolm Groat, and CEO, Mike Bullock. The march past will include eight Corps members, five British and three Australian, all of whom are veterans. It will begin at Horse Guards Parade and march towards Whitehall and the Cenotaph where members will pay respect and observe the traditional two minutes silence at 11 am.

The hope is that the Remembrance lunch which follows will be an annual event at which ex-service personnel and trustees of the company can reconnect with their roots and show respect. The lunch will observe a number of traditional formalities, including Grace, followed by toasts from individual marchers to HM The Queen, Chief Life Governor of Corps, its Founder, Captain Sir Edward Walter, and fallen comrades. Ending with a reading of ‘The Soldier’ by Rupert Brooke.

On Friday 8th, Corps Security is also hosting a visit for members of the Corps of Commissionaires Association of Australia to its burial plot at Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey and Founder’s resting place at the Walter ancestral home at Bearwood, Berkshire. Corps volunteers from around the country have also been out selling poppies for the Royal British Legion over the two weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

Nigel Horne, Major Accounts Director at Corps Security, has been a champion of this initiative. He described why the event means so much to him personally and the organisation as a whole: “This is one of the things that binds us to our company history. I come from a military background and the sense of being a part of something in the forces is so important. Events like this link us all to our roots and to something bigger than ourselves.”

Horne served in the army for nine years. Though the Corps Security senior management team is not made up exclusively by veterans, those from all backgrounds are keen to support Horne and champion the cause.

A great deal has changed since 1859. Medical professionals have recognised the need to address mental health alongside physical health; the nature of service jobs has altered greatly; the process of a career transition has become significantly more complex. There are a multitude of ways that life has become both simpler and far more complicated for ex-service personnel. Through all of this, Corps has stayed connected to its history and continued to create an environment that welcomes and respects veterans. Although the company now also recruits from outside the ex-forces’ talent pool, it has never left behind its founding ideals and currently works with the charity Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health support.

Whilst Remembrance Day provides moments of quiet reflection and sombre contemplation, the march and meal are both opportunities to give thanks for all those who have served and continue to serve our nation and to share, in Brooke’s words ‘laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, in hearts at peace’.
