Corps Security Celebrates Annual Thank Your Security Officer Day

This Thursday (16th September) Corps Security will be celebrating Thank Your Security Officer Day, an annual celebration of front-line security professionals.

Now in its third year, Thank Your Security Officer Day is a chance for Corps and its customers to recognise the amazing work security teams have done keeping people and properties safe over the past challenging year.

The day falls in International Security Officer Appreciation Week, which takes place from 12-18th September 2021.

Over the course of the day the management team at Corps, which is now a certified social enterprise, will take the time to visit as many sites as possible to thank the front-line teams. Corps is encouraging customers to get involved and thank their officers personally. Front-line officers will also be profiled across social media using #thankyoursecurityofficer and on the Corps website so people can find out more about the people behind the uniform.

“Over the past 18 difficult months, security officers have seen their roles change substantially. They helped to close down and manage empty buildings, support skeleton staff where people did remain and they are now welcoming people back into workplaces and support them through the new Covid protocols,” said Paul Lotter, managing director of Corps Security. “The perception of security has transformed from often an invisible and unacknowledged position to playing a central role in the country’s Covid response. We want to use this coming Thursday to thank our hard-working and dedicated officers who have worked throughout these challenging times.”

Thank Your Security Officer Day 2020

Security Officer Appreciation Week this year is taking place on 13-19th September. It is an international week of recognition and provides a great opportunity to acknowledge and thank the important security staff that keep us, the workplaces and buildings we occupy safe and secure.

For the second year running, Corps Security is excited to host ‘Thank Your Security Officer Day’, this year on Thursday 17th September, to give thanks to our dedicated security colleagues where it is truly due. Security can often be an invisible and thankless task and Corps Security wants to bring security officers out from the shadows and honour those who work around the clock to ensure the safety of everyone within the premises they work.

The past six months have been particularly challenging, and our security officers have been on the front-line of the Coronavirus pandemic. The Government’s decision to classify SIA licence-holding security professionals as critical workers has meant that in many cases they were the last people standing in many buildings – closing down facilities, supporting skeleton staff, getting premises ready for reopening and generally supporting people as they navigate the new workplace normal.

This year, members of the senior management team will be visiting some of our sites to recognise the hard work of our teams and show our appreciation. We are also inviting all of our clients to participate and would like you all to join us in showing appreciation to your security staff this ‘Thank Your Security Officer Day’. Please do share your messages via #thankyoursecurityofficer on social media.

Mental Health: Supporting Security Officers

Labour shortage. Squeezed margins. Brexit. The security sector is facing the perfect storm when it comes to recruiting the best talent. Parliament have had many votes regarding Brexit deals, but whatever the outcome, the security industry will continue to face challenging times.

The uncertainty around Brexit has created many issues for the security industry which is highly exposed owing to its dependence on immigrant labour. There is a risk that some of our most talented security professionals may not be able to work in the UK after we leave the EU.

At the same time, the UK is suffering a chronic shortage of skilled labour largely because of the pressure on margins and pay which mean security professionals will move on to another employer for a small increase in pay.

Security officers face numerous challenges in their roles. They work long, often anti-social, hours protecting people and the nation’s infrastructure from those who wish us harm. They spend hours watching and waiting in what can sometimes be a monotonous role only for sometimes shocking things to happen meaning they have to react very quickly. As they work alongside our emergency services to keep us safe, they occasionally get caught in the crossfire.

That’s why last month we launched Thank Your Security Officer Day to recognise the essential role our officers play, and why we are talking about security officer’s mental health at our breakfast event with IWFM on 30th October.

Mental health is often in the headlines and it’s fortunately becoming less of a taboo to talk about. But it’s easy to forget that some of our people working on the front-line to keep us safe can be equally affected. Many security officers also come from a military background, sometimes having suffered traumatic events and extreme levels of stress so this must also be recognised and supported.

Come to our breakfast event on the morning of 30th October (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/security-2020-is-your-security-function-fit-for-the-future-tickets-74809373851), hosted in association with the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management, and hear from experts from Combat Stress about how we can support out front-line officers to maintain good mental health, just as they spend their working life keeping us safe.

Helping to create the best working environment for our people is a step in the right direction to ensuring that we can keep the best talent, whatever the outcome with Brexit.
