In our latest ‘5 minutes with’ blog series, we speak to Ellen Cale, Internal Communications & Engagement Manager at Corps Security, about building an internal communications framework and value-driven work. Join us as we continue to celebrate International Women’s Day, by highlighting Ellen’s achievements and insights on creating meaningful workplace connections.
What does your role entail?
My role is to bridge the gap between our leadership team and our colleagues. We have so many great things happening across Corps Security. My job is to work with different teams to understand what’s happening in their areas and find the best way to communicate it to our colleagues, so they feel considered and connected.
What roles have you worked in prior to joining Corps Security?
My first step into internal communications was when I began my internship at Airbus as Internal Communications Assistant in 2016. I’ve since then worked in fintech and the energy industry, not always in internal communications but also in content writing. I’ve had the opportunity to write for a range of audiences which has really helped me learn how to best convey a message.
Tell us about your journey within the company.
When I joined Corps, my role was brand new so it has been such an adventure building a framework for internal comms from the ground up. I think my time at Corps has been where I have developed and learnt the most – rather than joining a company where internal comms processes are already established and you just slot into that way of working without question, I have had the freedom to think critically and identify what’s missing and what’s needed to fill any gaps. It’s really helped solidify just how powerful and important internal communications are.
What steps has your development taken and how has Corps supported you in this?
Everyone at Corps is always so supportive. My ideas are welcomed and listened to, and I have really had the space to develop.
What’s been your biggest highlight/moment in your role?
There have been so many, but I think it’s the little things that really stand out the most. Watching our colleagues engage with the content always feel like such a win. It’s been amazing to witness that engagement gradually grow over the last 18 months, whether that’s the average readership every month or when colleagues comment on the content we’ve shared.
What do you love most about working at Corps?
Corps is a company that stands by its values. Values are not just a tick box exercise here; they are part of the company’s DNA, and you can see they are shared by everyone who works here. Corps is a people first organisation, and this is evident in everything the company does.
What are the key ingredients to finding happiness at work?
A great team around you. Knowing that your colleagues want to see you succeed and are always looking after your best interests is the golden thread for wellbeing at work.
What helps you create a good work/life balance?
I have learnt that striking the right balance is closely linked with the culture of the company you work for. Working for a company that encourages balance and considers your wellbeing is crucial. I could have every intention of logging off at 5.30pm and spending time with my son, however, if you’re working in a company where those boundaries aren’t considered or respected, work can very quickly seep into your personal life and that balance is compromised. It’s very much a two-way thing. I never struggle to maintain work life balance at Corps.
