5 Minutes With Ellen Cale

In our latest ‘5 minutes with’ blog series, we speak to Ellen Cale, Internal Communications & Engagement Manager at Corps Security, about building an internal communications framework and value-driven work. Join us as we continue to celebrate International Women’s Day, by highlighting Ellen’s achievements and insights on creating meaningful workplace connections.

What does your role entail?

My role is to bridge the gap between our leadership team and our colleagues. We have so many great things happening across Corps Security. My job is to work with different teams to understand what’s happening in their areas and find the best way to communicate it to our colleagues, so they feel considered and connected.

What roles have you worked in prior to joining Corps Security?

My first step into internal communications was when I began my internship at Airbus as Internal Communications Assistant in 2016. I’ve since then worked in fintech and the energy industry, not always in internal communications but also in content writing. I’ve had the opportunity to write for a range of audiences which has really helped me learn how to best convey a message.

Tell us about your journey within the company.

When I joined Corps, my role was brand new so it has been such an adventure building a framework for internal comms from the ground up. I think my time at Corps has been where I have developed and learnt the most – rather than joining a company where internal comms processes are already established and you just slot into that way of working without question, I have had the freedom to think critically and identify what’s missing and what’s needed to fill any gaps. It’s really helped solidify just how powerful and important internal communications are.

What steps has your development taken and how has Corps supported you in this?

Everyone at Corps is always so supportive. My ideas are welcomed and listened to, and I have really had the space to develop.

What’s been your biggest highlight/moment in your role?

There have been so many, but I think it’s the little things that really stand out the most. Watching our colleagues engage with the content always feel like such a win. It’s been amazing to witness that engagement gradually grow over the last 18 months, whether that’s the average readership every month or when colleagues comment on the content we’ve shared.

What do you love most about working at Corps?

Corps is a company that stands by its values. Values are not just a tick box exercise here; they are part of the company’s DNA, and you can see they are shared by everyone who works here. Corps is a people first organisation, and this is evident in everything the company does.

What are the key ingredients to finding happiness at work?

A great team around you. Knowing that your colleagues want to see you succeed and are always looking after your best interests is the golden thread for wellbeing at work.

What helps you create a good work/life balance?

I have learnt that striking the right balance is closely linked with the culture of the company you work for. Working for a company that encourages balance and considers your wellbeing is crucial. I could have every intention of logging off at 5.30pm and spending time with my son, however, if you’re working in a company where those boundaries aren’t considered or respected, work can very quickly seep into your personal life and that balance is compromised. It’s very much a two-way thing. I never struggle to maintain work life balance at Corps.

5 Minutes With Doina Cojocaru-Thanasiadis

In our continuing “5 Minutes with” series, we’re delighted to present a special feature as part of our lead-up to International Women’s Day on Saturday, 8th March. Throughout this week, we’ll be spotlighting remarkable women within Corps Security who exemplify excellence and innovation in their roles. Today, we speak with Doina Cojocaru-Thanasiadis, whose unique background in arts and research brings a fresh perspective to the security industry and her role as a Bid Writer.

What does your role entail?

My role at Corps Security revolves around writing persuasive business proposals that balance creativity and technical precision. I work to cultivate emotional engagement with potential clients, whilst gathering data and evidence to show our expertise while complying with bidding requirements. This collaborative approach extends to the entire sales team, where collective problem-solving creates the solutions our clients know us for.

Beyond proposals, I turn my attention to industry award submissions, marketing materials for new services, and other communications content that showcases Corps Security’s talents.

What roles have you worked in prior to joining Corps Security?

Previously, my practice alternated between research and the arts. But one does not exclude the other!

Since 2016, inspired by the European refugee crisis, my research investigated principles shaping our understanding of displacement, borders and identity whilst exposing power structures that perpetuate inequality. This will culminate in a PhD research project later this year. My previous responsibilities included research design, developing frameworks, executing projects, and securing funding through proposal writing.

Alongside my academic pursuits, I’m a socially engaged artist, where I’ve developed projects exploring migration, cultural identity and collective memory. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been featured in solo exhibitions and publications, as well as undertake collaborative interdisciplinary work.

Tell us about your journey within the company

I would say my journey with Corps has been smooth and harmonious. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and supported, which made it easier for me to bring more of myself into the role.

My transition from social science and the arts to the business world has been groundbreaking in many ways. I can see projects from multiple perspectives, from the most idealistic to the most practical. Both are incredibly useful in the changing world of security.

What steps has your development taken and how has Corps supported you in this?

The learning curve of understanding the security sector is substantial. But I’ve never felt rushed in my development thanks to tremendous support that Corps Security gives, particularly from my manager Hayley.

What’s been your biggest highlight/moment in your role?

I couldn’t select just one. Whenever we win a contract, receive positive feedback from a client on our proposal, or win an award, it still brings me joy. The fact that my colleagues take the time to send me thoughtful message about my writing shows how special Corps Security is.

What do you love most about working at Corps?

As a writer, having an inspiring story to tell will always bring more spirit to my work. Knowing that what I write must responsibly represent the company carries both weight and enthusiasm—something I have gladly embraced over the past couple of years.

But what truly makes a difference in any workplace is the people. People make Corps what it is.

More than just its socially responsible business model and rich history, it’s the people who make each workday better. My positive colleague relationships are what truly defines my experience here.

What are the key ingredients to finding happiness at work?

I believe that not being confined to a single role makes work more stimulating and fulfilling. This approach benefits both the employer and the employee: allowing for greater curiosity, adaptability, and better performance.

I love the structure that my 9-to-5 job provides, but I also love the freedom that the arts and research bring. It’s the balance between the two that keeps me invigorates me and helps me grow.

What helps you create a good work/life balance?

Juggling work and life is a constant challenge; and aiming for a perfect balance can lead to overwhelming. Chasing the perfect balance can make us feel not good enough when circumstances change.

For me, the question isn’t so much about balance but about direction, meaning, and having something to look forward to every day. This helps give purpose to everything we do.

Enhancing Equality In The FM And Security Sector

March is a busy month for events promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in the facilities management and security industries. Worldwide, International Women’s Day is a mainstay of our calendars on March 8, while this year, the British Diversity Awards is taking place just two days later – an event we are proud to have interest in with Seetan Varsani, our Major Accounts & Strategic Development Director, nominated for Inspirational Role Model of the Year. Meanwhile, a ThisWeekinFM recruitment fair, also slated for March 10, presents an important opportunity for ex-military personnel to get back into work through taking up a career in our sector. It therefore feels timely to be talking about equality, diversity and inclusion.

Closing the gender divide

We still have a way to go in the FM and security space, especially when it comes to closing the gender divide. According to Women in Facility Management, although the trend is starting to shift, men outnumber women nine to one in facilities management leadership roles. The latest figures from the UK Security Industry Authority paint a similar picture. As of January 2022, there were 40,773 female SIA license holders compared to 351,370 males, meaning women make up around 11.6% of the overall security workforce. While this represents a 0.3 percentage point increase on January 2021, the dial has not shifted dramatically.

And COVID-19 has added an extra dynamic which appears to have impacted the global gender equality situation. According to research by McKinsey, women’s jobs are 1.8 times more vulnerable to pandemic circumstances than those held by men, and even more so if they are part of a marginalised community.

Welcoming marginalised communities

In 2019, Corps Security launched the Corps Together campaign which coordinates much of our activity in this area and has been shortlisted for several awards. One marginalised community we are particularly proud to support is the former people who all too often suffer from challenges with their mental health after they have left the Army, Navy or Air Force.

Corps is an active supporter of Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health, for whom we operate a 1% turnover working capital scheme, helping the organisation to fund its vital work. We also have close ties with the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA), the UK’s oldest national tri-service military charity. Meanwhile, on March 10, Corps will be exhibiting at and is sponsoring Ex-Military – A Journey Into FM, a recruitment fair hosted by ThisWeekinFM.

Security with a social mission

Now is time to act for equality. Last year, Corps was proud to be awarded Gold status in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme for outstanding support towards the Armed Forces community, recognition that only fuels our desire to go further.  Indeed, whether it’s helping underserved communities such as military veterans, or the work of our guardians to promote equality across age, sex, religion, disability, gender and race within our organisation, our message will remain the same – as a social enterprise, people are at our very heart.
