5 Minutes With Scott Hudson

In our latest ‘5 minutes with’ blog series, we speak to Scott Hudson, Commercial Manager at Corps Security, about his journey from Security Officer to Commercial Manager, and his experience here as a veteran.

Tell us about your current role

As Commercial Manager, I oversee the review and sign-off of all new business proposals and existing contract reviews. I manage around 200 contracts and any new business that comes our way. Overseeing supplier relationships, I make sure everything runs cost effectively and according to contract specifications.

What was your journey before joining Corps Security?

Before starting Corps Security, I was in the Queen’s Guards and later served in the Royal Marines Reserve. After leaving the forces in 2001, I briefly worked as a security officer for another company, before joining Corps Security, which was then known as The Corps of Commissionaires.

At the time, Corps Security exclusively recruited from military and public service backgrounds. My military precision has certainly come in handy for the high standards needed here at Corps.

How has your career developed within Corps Security?

I started here as a Relief Officer, then moved through various roles including Concierge Security, Area Supervisor, Duty Manager, Contracts Manager, and Business Support Admin, before becoming Commercial Manager in 2018.

Seeing all sides of the coin has proved invaluable in my current role. When dealing with sales and operations teams, having broader experience helps me understand different perspectives and make better decisions.

How does Corps Security support veterans?

As treasurer of the Corps Veterans Association (CVA), I’m particularly proud of the organisation’s commitment to veterans. It’s fantastic to see the things we do for our veterans, including charity fundraising. We have close ties with Combat Stress, too.

Last year, through the CVA, we went to Normandy for the D-Day anniversary, walking across the beaches and laying wreaths. Corps Security fully supported us in attending this meaningful tribute. Doing so is a particular career highlight of mine.

What makes Corps Security a unique employer?

For me, it’s the people and the supportive culture that sets Corps Security apart. You can call anyone in this company, from the CEO to front of house, and they will try their best to support you.

I always value the company’s approach to internal progression. Corps Security usually promotes from within if they see potential. Hopefully, my journey from Relief Officer to where I am now shows other people in the business what’s possible if they want to progress.

What’s your approach to work-life balance?

Despite managing a complex role, I try to maintain a healthy work-life balance through regular exercise and family time. I train six to seven days a week and focus on healthy eating. We also set aside specific family time, like games nights at home, to ensure we always have quality time together.

What are the key ingredients to finding happiness at work?

The key is doing something you enjoy and knowing you’re making a difference. It’s a privilege to contribute towards the business and help our colleagues, especially the veterans – because that’s what we’re all about as a company.

Corps Security takes pride in supporting both veterans and civilian professionals in building rewarding careers in security. Whether security guarding, security consultancy, or security monitoring, we offer diverse opportunities for growth and development. If you’re interested in joining our team and building a career with purpose, get in touch with us here.

Corps Wins Challenge Event Of The Year At The Business Charity Awards

Corps Security has won the Challenge Event of the Year at Third Sector’s Business Charity Awards for its Tour de Corps fundraiser for Combat Stress. The fundraiser was a 750-mile countrywide cycling tour of all Corps mainland offices, starting on April 23rd 2023 in Glasgow and concluding in London.

Corps Security won the award because of the intensity of the challenge, and for exceeding its initial £5,000 fundraising target by over double.  In seven days, the Torps de Corps cyclists combatted snow and rain to cover 750 miles, at times reaching nearly 10,000m above sea level as they wound their way through the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the Brecon Beacons. In total, the group raised £11,500 for Corps’ nominated charity, Combat Stress.

Combat Stress is the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health, which supports ex-military men and women with the effects of their service, including trauma and PTSD. The challenge’s main objective was to raise as much money as possible for the charity and bring Corps colleagues together to inspire camaraderie and teamwork.

The team planned their entire trip a year in advance – creating an itinerary, training and preparing. All Corps colleagues were welcome to join, and some individuals joined the team for the shorter legs of the challenge. Andy Topp, Rob Hill, Scott Hudson, Carly Bedford, and Dale Johnson all took part in the long journey. They were followed by a volunteer team of drivers, logistics support, and welfare/first aid along the way.

At the awards, Corps commercial manager Scott Hudson, who had completed the entire cycle, and Maggie Mills, corporate fundraiser for Combat Stress were in attendance. They accepted the award as a tribute to the strong relationship between the two organisations.

Andy Topp, sales and marketing director for Corps said, “It is an honour to receive recognition for an incredible effort from the Tour de Corps team.  Corps wanted to support the fundraiser as much as possible right from the beginning, providing all accommodation and support to the incredible group of cyclists.

“We were really tested with regular 5am training starts and seven days of tough weather, huge areas covered, and even larger heights reached. This achievement has strengthened our relationship with Combat Stress, and it was an honour to help raise money to save lives.”

Garry Burns, head of corporate partnerships and events at Combat Stress said “We’re thrilled that Corps Security’s 1200km cycling challenge has been recognised as the Challenge Event of the Year at the Business Charity Awards 2024. Since our partnership began in 2015, Corps has raised nearly £90,000, supporting veterans’ mental health and highlighting our shared mission to improve the lives of those who have served.”

Day Five – Ross-on-Wye to Bristol

Wales weather lets rip on the riders

Day Five was the hardest day for weather, Wales didn’t disappoint with mist, fog, rain and so much more.

Sadly, Day Five was the first and hopefully last time that a stretch of the challenge had to be skipped. The weather created dangers as roads were waterlogged, and there was a real danger that the bikes could get damaged or more concerningly injuries could occur.

After a quick recovery from the support team van, the team arrived at the Cardiff office where the team had laid on a spread and more importantly hot tea and coffee too.

Well done to Andy Topp, Sales and Marketing Director who joined as a guest rider. More from Rob, below.

Day Four – Stafford to Ross-on-Wye

Bike issues meant Dale Johnson had to pull out….

Day Four threw a few challenges at the team, none more so that Dale Johnson, who after many issues with his bike has had to make the extremely tough decision to pull out of the challenge. We want to take this opportunity to praise the amazing effort Dale has put into this challenge and for pacing through hundreds of miles despite equipment issues. Thank you, Dale! We appreciate every mile and minute.

You may have noticed if you were watching live that the team struggled to get out of Stafford. After a few laps the team were on route to Birmingham – albeit hitting traffic and roadworks on the way.

The team were surprised to see Neil Shanks join them (in a vehicle, not on a bike), taking some amazing photos (some of these are below) and dropping off a hamper of amazing goodies for the team. The riders soon reached the Birmingham office where they were also greeted by the Corps team.

Sadly, we have had some tracking device issues so apologies that we cannot see the whole route today. But, Rob fills you in below.

Day Three – Leeds to Stafford via Manchester

The weather gave the team a boost

Day Three took the team from Leeds in the heart of Yorkshire, via the Manchester office to the lovely town of Stafford.

Unlike Day Two, the team had less issues, in fact – the weather held up for the day and the team were able to pick up pace as they trekked down the west side of the UK. Rob – he was waiting for the hotel receptionist to dry his clothes. Don’t know how he smooth talked his way into that one!

The team are in good spirits. They are tired, but they know how important these vital funds are to Combat Stress and the UK veterans they support. So, if you can, please give generously. Thank you!

Day Two – Carlisle to Leeds

Freezing falls and fords

Following an incredible feat on day one, the team set off at 8:30am on one of the hardest days of the 7-day challenge. Day two also saw the arrival of Carly Bedford from the Leeds office, fresh and unfazed by the challenge, Carly began to set the pace for the lads as they felt the pain of day two.

Day two threw some challenges at the team too. Riding at over 7,800ft, the team faces severely cold weather, battling snow at the high altitude, not quite what you expect in early April. The pace and pressure of the challenge began to show, as Scott misses a turn and when trying to correct himself on the winding back road, had a little tumble. After a couple of mins in the support van, he was once again off with the team.

If anyone has experienced a countryside Ford, you will know you do all you can to avoid it. As Rob and Carly make use of the foot bridge as they were now a few minutes ahead of the other two, the boys didn’t think so quickly on their feet and as such decided to have a little swim in the freezing cold water. Ouch! But again, once stripped (yes naked) and reclothed, off they went to the finish line.

The team would like to give a massive shout out to Andy Bedford, Carly’s husband, who joined Rob for the last 40km of the cycle as the team took on the cycle route made famous by the Tour de France. Thank you, Andy.

Day Two: Results

Climbing to an altitude of over 7,800ft, the team cycled over 119 miles in 8.5 hours. What an

Day One – Glasgow to Carlisle

On day one, Rob Hill, Scott Hudson and Dale Johnson set off from the Corps Monitoring office in Glasgow. Day one was not kind, as the team faced wind and rain as they faced the steep inclines of the Scottish landscape.

The team battled the elements to complete the 116 miles to Carlisle, passing Douglas, Lockerbie and Gretna Green before reaching Carlisle around 7pm.
